2013 June 25, Featuring Mary Dobson and Jessica Walther Speaking on Eating Disorders

Guest: Mary Dobson, LMFT, and Jessica Walther, from The Center for Discovery speaking about eating disorders.

Rates of eating disorders and disordered eating symptoms are on the rise amongst women and girls of all ages.

The Center for Discovery New England in Southport, CT is an adolescent eating disorder residential treatment program. It is dedicated solely to the treatment of adolescent females and males, ages 11 to 17. The residential treatment program is both individualized to each resident and intensive. Center for Discovery New England is exceptionally effective at understanding the destructive behaviors and underlying emotional issues of binge eating, bulimia, anorexia and other complex disordered eating. Every member of the Center for Discovery team has a deep commitment to the well-being and healing of adolescents and their families.

Mary Dobson is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT.) Mary became passionate about issues pertaining to adolescent development during her time in research with the Connecticut Women’s Health Project at Yale University. Ms. Dobson is now Program Director for Center for Discovery New England. She is devoted to helping teens find their voice, and is thrilled to be a part of the talented team spearheading Center for Discovery New England.

Angry Pursuer

This week Trevor talks about the “Angry Pursuer.” An angry pursuer in a relationship is usually pretty anxious, unsure of their emotions, and don’t know what to do. Reaching for their partner but not sure how to do so, their emotions escalate as they become more and more angry.

2013 June 4, Featuring Dr. Richard Frank, Karen Newman, and Katherine Snedaker

Guest: Dr. Richard Frank, author of Fighting Cancer with Knowledge and Hope

Dr. Richard Frank’s award winning book, Fighting Cancer with Knowledge and Hope: A Guide for Patients, Families, and Health Care Providers was recently published in its second edition. Anyone who is diagnosed with cancer receives a frightening blow, and in many cases the diagnosis is accompanied by a bewildering array of treatment choices. In this invaluable book, Dr. Frank offers comfort and help to cancer patients, their families, and their caretakers. Dr. Frank empowers patients by unlocking the mysteries of the disease and explaining in plain language the ways to confront and combat it.

Dr. Frank is a hematologist/oncologist and Director of Cancer Research at the Whittingham Cancer Center at Norwalk Hospital. He also serves as Medical Director of the Mid-Fairfield Hospice in Wilton, CT.   In 2005, Dr. Frank was awarded the Humanitarian Award by the Leukemia-Lymphoma Society of Fairfield County for his commitment to patient care and education. In 2009, he was again selected by his peers as one of Connecticut’s “Top Doctors” in a survey published in Connecticut Magazine. In 2007, he was one of three physicians honored nationwide with the David King Community Clinical Scientist Award from the Association of Community Cancer Centers.

Guest: Karen Newman, Founder of Nutrifit

Karen is a blogger and soon to be author. She has survived breast cancer and is a champion triathlete. Karen was a child athlete and Most Valuable Athlete for track at her high school in Fayetteville, NY for her achievements in cross country running and track.  After having battled an eating disorder, and having family members in the medical field on both sides, it was a natural fit for Karen to pursue a degree and career in nutrition, with emphases on sports nutrition and weight management.

Nutrifit is a company created by Karen Newman to inspire and support people in transforming their lives through diet, exercise, self-love and a relationship with God.  Based in Greenwich, CT, Karen has been inspiring people toward change, and helping them see tangible results since 1986.

Guest: Katherine “Price” Snedaker

Katherine is the owner and president at Sports CAPP and Community Education and Counseling at The Concussion Specialists of CT, Katherine has been fighting cancer since early this year. She has courageously been sharing her experience via social media. We were honored to speak with Katherine  about her ongoing fight.
